My Biography

Hello fabulous students!. My name is Joanna Pico, and I teach ESL Intermediate Level 2. This will be my fifth year teaching at Lynwood Community Adult School. I always knew I wanted to be a teacher, even when I was young. I always enjoy helping others learn and grow. My first job was working in the classroom as Instructional Aide helping 5th grade students to read and write in English. After that I became a Head Start teacher for six years working with small children.

I graduated from Dominguez Hills University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology in 2016. My passion for teaching continues to grow and I’m currently pursuing my Master’s Degree in Education. When I’m not teaching, I enjoy helping people in my community and as a proud daughter of immigrants from Ecuador I became the translator for my family. I belong to a group of volunteers that help immigrants in the city of Los Angeles. I am a proud mother of a six years old boy who keeps me busy and moving. I am eager to meet you and together learn and grow to the fullest.

My Teaching Philosophy

I believe that all students are capable of learning. All students can learn when they are accepted for who and where they are in their educational journey. I believe students learn best when they are in a positive environment and it is my responsibility to make them feel welcomed, comfortable and safe.

I decided to become a teacher to make a positive impact on the lives of my students and to engage them in meaningful thinking and learning to reach their full potential. I believe every student is unique and their learning styles should be too. As a teacher, I strive to provide a supportive environment to conduct different styles of learning to discover and empower students. "Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world"
