Celebrating 70+ Years of Adult Education in Lynwood

Since opening its doors in 1954, Lynwood Community Adult School (LCAS) has proudly served as a hub for lifelong learning and career advancement in the Lynwood community. What began with classes in sewing, cooking, and homemaking has grown into a comprehensive adult education center offering a wide range of academic and career programs.

In 1955, LCAS introduced its first high school diploma classes, followed by the addition of English as a Second Language (ESL) in the 1960s to support a growing population of international learners. The school continued to expand with the launch of Adult Basic Education (ABE) in 1971 and computer courses in the 1980s. LCAS proudly established its first Vocational Nursing program in 1986, paving the way for a robust lineup of career training opportunities in the decades that followed.

By the 1990s and early 2000s, LCAS had evolved into a full-service adult school, offering programs in medical billing, computer repair, security training, GED preparation, community-based tutoring, distance learning, and automotive repair. In the 2000s, LCAS secured a permanent home at 11277 Atlantic Avenue, where it continues to thrive today.

LCAS operates on a three-trimester and two-semester calendar aligned with the traditional school year and offers the following programs:

• 55+ Community Education

• Adult Basic Education

• Citizenship Preparation

• English as a Second Language (ESL)

• High School Diploma & High School Equivalency (GED & HiSET)

• Career Training, including:

  • Business Information Worker

  • EKG Technician

  • Engineering/Drafting with SolidWorks

  • Nursing Assistant (CNA)

  • Phlebotomy Technician

  • Pharmacy Technician

  • Vocational Nursing (LVN)

  • Child Development
